A successful partnership with Cwm Engineering

Since 2022, we have been supplying our metalworking fluids to Cwm Engineering, a contract manufacturing company based in Wales. Since its foundation, Cwm Engineering has experienced impressive growth, thanks to its commitment to continuous improvement and the high quality of its work. The company processes a wide range of materials, including plastics, aluminium, steel and heat-resistant alloys, using both manual and CNC machines. In addition to machine uptime and productivity, Cwm Engineering’s focus is on the health, safety and well-being of its employees.

The start of our collaboration

In 2022, Cwm Engineering faced the challenge of finding the ideal metalworking fluid solution for its diverse range of machines and materials. The increasing number and complexity of their machines made machine availability and productivity crucial factors for continued economic success. Although the metalworking fluid used at the time was a branded product, it had a short service life and caused unpleasant odours as well as skin irritation among staff. After switching to another manufacturer, further problems arose. Although the new metalworking fluid contained no harmful chemicals, its performance varied from machine to machine. There was a lack of support from the new supplier. Cwm Engineering therefore turned to Oemeta.

Our solution: NOVAMET 760

Oemeta rose to the challenge and successfully resolved the issues Cwm Engineering was facing at the time. Following a detailed consultation, we recommended our NOVAMET 760, which proved to be the ideal choice for the contract manufacturer. After a successful test in one of their machines, the Mazak VTC-530C, the service life of the metalworking fluid increased by over 70%. With the clear results from the first machine, Cwm Engineering and Oemeta agreed on a phased approach to gradually phase out the previous fluid and introduce NOVAMET 760 into all machines.
Through our subsequent regular maintenance, we were able to achieve significant savings for Cwm Engineering in terms of metalworking fluid costs and disposal. In addition, both MWF consumption and machine downtime were reduced.

NOVAMET 760 is designed for the machining of sensitive materials and stands out for its first-class material compatibility. With its impressive performance and efficiency across a wide range of applications, as well as its low consumption, it is the ideal solution for demanding machining processes.

More interesting facts and figures about the MWF exchange

The savings achieved by introducing Oemeta’s NOVAMET 760 were realised gradually over a 12-month period. By way of comparison: the previous cutting fluid, costing over £2,600 per drum and with a consumption of up to six drums, cost the company more than £15,000 per year. The Oemeta MWF, on the other hand, cost half as much as its predecessor, resulting in an immediate saving of around £7,000. This would at least be the case if it were used at the same rate: thanks to the remarkable extension in the metalworking fluid’s service life, Cwm Engineering now only needs two to three barrels per year – an excellent MWF service life that will improve even further once the remainder of the previous supplier’s MWF has evaporated from the machines.

However, our customer is not only saving on metalworking fluid costs and the associated weekly tests and man-hours, but also on metalworking fluid disposal. Cwm Engineering previously had to dispose of two 1,000-litre IBCs of MWF two to three times a year, amounting to costs of up to £2,400. With a more than 70% increase in MWF lifespan, disposal costs are inevitably set to fall by 70% as well – it is estimated that Cwm Engineering can save an additional £1,600 in disposal costs by switching coolants.

The cost reduction achieved by implementing Oemeta’s NOVAMET 760 was overwhelming for the family-run business, but the benefits go even further. As Andrew Ritchie adds: “We have taps near every machine and we have a drum of NOVAMET 760 with a mixer on a trolley that can be rolled up to any machine. Once the drum and mixer are connected to the tap, we can easily top up the metalworking fluid in any of our machines. Doing this alone has saved us hours every week, and with Oemeta – who manage the condition of our metalworking fluid every two weeks – we save a significant amount of man-hours on MWF testing. There is also no longer any need to shut down machines for sump cleaning, which can be a major inconvenience for our business.”
